Descripton:
This is a 1919, Howard Chandler Christy, 1st edition Red Cross recruitment poster -- created in support of the war effort and Red Cross recruitment. The poster reads, “The Spirit of America – Join” and features a young Red Cross volunteer nurse holding the colors with a large red cross in the lower right hand corner. During the WWI, the Red Cross labored not only to raise money (which in the course of two separate pledge drives raised more than $297 million) but also to enroll members. By the end of the war, Red Cross membership "had grown to thirty million -- almost one-third of the entire population."
